The People Behind the Bread

In the summer of 2022, Davis Larsen was driving tour buses in Skagway, Alaska — just trying to earn money for school. One evening, he posted a simple request in a local Facebook group: anyone have sourdough starter to share?
What he got back was extraordinary. A local resident handed him a starter that traced its lineage back to the Klondike Gold Rush of 1898. Prospectors had carried vials of this very culture around their necks to keep it warm in the brutal Alaskan winters, baking their daily bread from it on the trail. Davis named it Kip.
Back in Utah, Davis met Kara James — and they fell in love over sourdough focaccia. She followed him back to Alaska, where they baked together, built a life, and eventually got married, serving their handcrafted sourdough to family and friends at their own wedding reception.
After finishing school, they looked at corporate jobs and internships. None of it felt right. So they started with two Dutch ovens, a deep love of good bread, and Kip — and built Bussin Bread from the ground up.
Today, Bussin Bread is a growing North Logan staple. Every loaf is made with locally milled organic flour from Central Milling, naturally fermented with Kip, and baked fresh for the community that has so generously welcomed them.
Meet Kip — Our Prized Starter
Kip is 127 years old and going strong. He's been through the Klondike Gold Rush, an Alaskan winter or two, a wedding reception, and now daily bakes in North Logan. "It's like his baby," Kara says. "Davis wakes up at 2 a.m. and says, 'I have to feed Kip.'" Every loaf you buy carries that living history in every bite.
